2000 - The Judges
Comments
Nigella Lawson, Chair of the judges, comments:
‘We were looking for a shortlist that reflected the qualities and achievements
of the titles submitted. On top of that we wanted to
choose books which we were not only keen, but positively
itched, to recommend to friends and other, unknown, readers.’
The Samuel Johnson Prize aims to reward
and highlight the very best books across the whole range
of non-fiction publishing. The first ever prize was
awarded last year to Antony Beevor for his
book, Stalingrad which went on to become
a number one bestseller. One of the most celebrated
books of 1999, it has to date sold over 320,000 copies in
the UK and Commonwealth alone.
The Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction is
sponsored by a retired British businessman and philanthropist,
who wishes to remain anonymous.
The winner will be announced on Tuesday 23 May at a dinner
at the Banqueting House, London.
