Robert Winston chair
Lord Winston, the eminent doctor and scholar and currently
fronting BBC 1’s Child of Our Time is today
announced as Chair of the judges for The 2006 BBC FOUR Samuel
Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction. The prize is the UK’s
most lucrative and prestigious non fiction literary award,
known as ‘the non-fiction Man Booker’ (Sunday
Times).
Lord Winston is joined by an engaging and dynamic panel
of judges who offer a wide range of literary, journalistic
and academic skills and experience. They are theatre director
and author Sir Richard Eyre, author and journalist Pankaj
Mishra, novelist and former Deputy Editor of The New
Statesman, Cristina Odone and Literary Editor of the Sunday
Telegraph, Michael Prodger.
Robert Winston comments:
“I am delighted to be working with such a diverse
and talented panel of judges. Between us we cover a wide
range of disciplines and experience. It will be fascinating,
over the next few months as we delve through the piles and
piles of books, to find our eventual winner which is bound
to be thought-provoking, engaging and enticingly well written.”
The prize, sponsored by BBC FOUR, aims to reward the best
of non-fiction, from biography, travel and popular science
to the arts and current affairs. BBC FOUR will televise the
awards ceremony and feature complementary programming in
the channel – forming a key part of their commitment
to diverse, intelligent and culturally enriching programmes.
The BBC FOUR Samuel Johnson Prize is open to the authors
of all non-fiction books published in the UK, regardless
of nationality. The longlist, which features approximately
twenty titles, will be announced in the middle of March.
The shortlist of up to six titles will be announced in May.
The judges will announce the winner of The BBC FOUR Samuel
Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction at an awards dinner at The
Savoy Hotel, London on Wednesday 14th June. The winner receives £30,000,
and each of the five shortlisted authors, £1,000.
